Here's some tips

There are many things to think about when commissioning a piece of art. This is a unique gift that needs a lot of time and thought, as not only are you investing time/trust and money into an artist.( A daunting prospect for some). You are making an investment for you.

Here are some things to consider.

• Artists see the world differently, so it is worth looking at their portfolio. There is no point investing in an artist , whose work does not match your taste.

• If you are after a commission from a photograph, please make sure you send the artist a good picture, for example you want a portrait of a dog make sure it is clear and at the angle you want. Artists can not work miracles a blurry photo will mean a blurry painting and many artists will refuse to progress.

• Have an idea of a budget before you start, as the artist may suggest a size a medium that suits.(however if you have an idea , or have seen already what you would like, stay true to the idea)

• Do not be put off if an artist asks for a deposit, this is a way of securing the commission but also it will pay for time and materials if your commission falls through.

• Do not ask artists to copy other artists work that are still living, you can suggest a style that you may like. But outright copying is seen as plagiarism and may cause the artist to get sued. Some artists take inspirations from the greats, to create studies or to improve their practice ( we have all attempted a to paint a Sargent) Or they will change 30% from the original
